LANSING, Mich. (WOOD) - The former Godwin Heights alternative school principal who resigned in 2008 amid accusations of inflating student count pleaded guilty at a pre-trial hearing Wednesday in Kent County Circuit Court.
Jerry Emde pleaded to one count of misconduct in office -- a five-year felony, and one count
of schools-falsifying records, which is a two-year misdemeanor.
He will be sentenced at 2 p.m. July 20 in Kent County.
Emde was charged and arraigned Jan. 28 for a scheme to obtain about $1.8 million in excess student aid during the 2006-08 school years.
A district report released in November 2008 stated that Emde said he was not trying to artificially inflate attendance but instead wanted to "capture actual student attendance -- attendance that would not be captured using state mandated rules."
The accusations first came to light after a district employee told her father that Emde was having the employee forge signatures in school attendance logs. The woman's father notified the Michigan Department of Education, which in turn notified an auditor from the Kent Intermediate School District.
Godwin Heights Public Schools was forced to pay the state $1.8 million to cover money the state paid to educate students based on the falsified logs.
